Top tips for Wedding Tablescapes

Is wedding decor your thing?

Welcome back to The Latest - today’s blog is especially stylish, all about your wedding tablescapes. We’re bringing you 3 top tips on designing your wedding table decor to make it visually balanced and chic, and also functionally beautiful.

Wedding Design Rules

As you may have noticed by now, Bungalow focuses on creating your wedding around a personalised design, to ensure the end result is the showstopping moodboard-esque day you’ve been dreaming of but it feels like you. When planning your wedding tables and wedding tablescapes, you have the option of hiring a wedding planner who also specialises in styling, or a wedding stylist to dress the venue for you - or you can do it yourself! If you choose to DIY, keep these wedding tablescape design rules in mind…

Layering! Pay attention to detail and layer your wedding place setting items. Think about the overall aesthetic and colour scheme of your wedding design, and layer items in the following way. (Remember this is an example idea; feel free to get creative with your place settings!) Start with a base under your plate to add depth and style - charger plates are great for this, or individual place mats or tablecloths in interesting textures and patterns. This is practically a good idea too, because if your wedding caterers serve food plated the table settings will not be bare when it gets whisked away. Add your plate on top of the charger or base, followed by a napkin. Consider unique wedding napkin styles, including different textures and ways of tying them - they don’t always have to be practical and can function decoratively too! Remember, for a chic, modern wedding vibe we’re talking less napkins folded into swans and more artistic knots and interesting fabrics.

Candles! Our design rule surrounding candles (and other items that are there purely for decoration, height or added interest) is to style them in odd numbers. It’s more visually appealing to see a grouping of 3, 5 or 7 candles or items on your self-designed wedding table than neat pairs. Additionally, think about using candles of differing heights, shapes and colours within your scheme.

Guest Place Settings

Our next wedding decor tip is about those all-important details that elevate a wedding tablescape from decorative to stand-out, and serve to add functionality as well as style. Consider that when your big day rolls around and your guests arrive, you will want them to be able to successfully eat whatever culinary delights you have chosen. Each guest needs the following…

3 glasses! Traditionally a formal dinner table has 3 glasses per guest, one for water, one for wine and one for a toast. However, you can put your own personal stamp on this - if you want to use cocktail or champagne glasses, or coloured tumblers you can! As well as glasses your guests will need 2-3 sets of cutlery. Yes, this is why there are always so many forks. If you’re serving several courses at your wedding, your guests need a fresh set of cutlery for each course. Finally, remember there needs to be room on the table for water and wine/drinks. Don’t fill your wedding tablescape so full of detail that there’s no room for a water jug, otherwise you might find yourself with a dry bar very quickly!

Sharing Platters

Our final tip is about wedding sharing platters as your catering option. Sharing platters or boards are a great way to encourage a sociable feel and can be a more relaxed wedding breakfast choice. If you’ve chosen to have sharing platters at your wedding, our top tip is to remember to leave room on the table! Speak to your caterers and find out exactly how the food will be presented and served - some serving platters can be huge! Think about your guest experience when eating, too. If you fill the middle of the table with a tall centrepiece and your sharing platters are set up to be divided up across the table, your guests will end up reaching over and have an awkward experience - worst case scenario, your flowers might have to leave the table to make room for the food. Considering your food style as part of your overall design plan has huge benefits when it comes to styling and eating on your wedding day.
